In January of 2020, Tremont Sheldon P.C. filed lawsuits on behalf of three women who were sexually abused by their theater director, Daniel Checovetes, while they were minors.
The lawsuits were filed in Waterbury Superior Court against Naugatuck Teen Theater, Landmark Community Theatre, Warner Theatre, and Thomaston Opera House (through the Commission and Town). Naugatuck Teen Theater is a youth program in Naugatuck, Connecticut open to all 7th through 12th grade students from surrounding communities. Landmark Community Theatre is a community theater that offers both adult and youth programs located at the Thomaston Opera House in Thomaston, Connecticut. Warner Theatre is the largest performing arts center in Northwest Connecticut and is located in Torrington, Connecticut.
“During examination at his sworn deposition in these cases, Checovetes admitted that he had sexual relations with two of the plaintiffs when they were minors,” said Jason Tremont, an attorney representing the plaintiffs.
“Checovetes also admitted that he lied to the Southington Police Department about abusing one of the victims when he was investigated in 2018,” said Tim Ramsey, an attorney who also represents the plaintiffs.
Thereafter, the Southington Police Department reviewed Daniel Checovetes’ deposition and reopened its investigation. Ultimately, on June 2nd, 2023, Checovetes was arrested on three charges of sexual assault in the second degree, a class C felony in Connecticut.
“We commend the Southington Police Department for reopening its criminal investigation against Daniel Checovetes. This news brings our clients one step closer to obtaining justice for the abuse perpetrated on them by Checovetes,” said Tim Ramsey.
“We are extremely proud of our clients’ bravery in pursuing justice for the harm that they have endured by Checovetes. We, along with our clients, continue to fight every day to ensure that Checovetes never sexually abuses another child again,” said Jason Tremont.
