What should you know about concussions?

On Behalf of | Apr 6, 2022 | Personal Injury |

Concussions are an injury that most people know of, without actually knowing much about them. Unfortunately for potential victims, many people don’t understand how dangerous concussions can be.

Concussions can be caused by many things and can have long-lasting effects on a person’s life. What are the most important things to now about concussions?

The causes of head injuries

Mayo Clinic discusses the issue of concussions, a common and potentially dangerous injury. Some of the most common causes of concussions include car accidents and falls. Head injuries after a car accident are more common than realized. Concussions can occur after hitting your head during an accident, even if the injury only seemed minor.

Falls may occur from a height, such as workers who use ladders or harnesses to reach high places. They can also occur due to slip and fall incidents, in which a victim slips or trips on flooring and hits their head during the fall.

Head injuries of any sort can cause major impacts on a victim’s health. This includes concussions, which can range from mild to severe. A mild concussion will typically result in a few symptoms that are relatively easy to manage, such as a headache that eases with time.

However, every head injury is different. Head injuries can take days, weeks or even months to show the entire scope of the injury, even if you think you only suffered a minor concussion at the time of the crash or fall.

Potential repercussions

Severe concussions can result in issues like piercing migraines, memory loss, dizziness, loss of vision, tinnitus and even unconsciousness.

The most important thing after taking a blow to the head is to get immediate medical attention. Some concussions may heal on their own, but some require medical intervention, such as if the injury caused large amounts of brain swelling.

Only a medical professional can determine how much and what kind of medical treatment a concussion victim needs. The sooner they get this treatment, the faster they can heal and the less likely they are to suffer from complications.
