Do You Know Who is Coaching Your Child?

With the fall season of sports approaching, do you know who is coaching your children?  Coaches are given full access to children in a variety of situations.  The Jerry Sandusky case has created a heightened awareness; however, are you going to question your neighbor who is the elementary school soccer coach. The US Soccer Youth Soccer Association has the following on their blog in regards to coaches and background checks: "We believe all coaches involved in youth soccer should be subject to background checks and that coaching licenses be required as part of the risk management process.  We also believe that each coach should be issued a registration card, certifying that they have completed the risk management process and have attained the required coaching certification."   The below story was recently reported in regards to a High School Soccer Coach. A former Chariho High School assistant soccer coach has been indicted by a federal grand jury on child pornography charges.

Boy Scouts of America Files Reveal Repeat Child Abuse

Tremont Sheldon Robinson Mahoney found the following article interesting regarding the Boy Scout of America "perversion files" and the moving/relocating of child sexual predators. During our work with clergy sexual abuse, priests were often moved from parish to parish and continued to commit their heinous acts.  Much like the "perversion files", the church had secret archives detailing abuse.  The article below details what has been discovered at Boy Scouts of America. Internal documents from the Boy Scouts of America reveal more than 125 cases in which men suspected of molestation allegedly continued to abuse Scouts, despite a blacklist meant to protect boys from sexual predators. A Los Angeles Times review of more than 1,200 files from 1970 to 1991 found suspected abusers regularly remained in the organization after officials were first presented with sexual misconduct allegations.

Philadelphia Monsignor Imprisoned for Covering Up Child Sex Abuse in Catholic Church

Monsignor William Lynn, the highest-ranking clergyman convicted in the U.S. Roman Catholic Church scandal, was sentenced on Tuesday to up to six years in prison for covering up child sex abuse by priests in Philadelphia.

Judge M. Teresa Sarmina told Lynn, 61, the former secretary of the clergy for the Philadelphia Archdiocese, that he protected "monsters in clerical garb who molested children." Sentenced to three to six years in prison, Lynn had faced the possibility of a slightly longer maximum sentence of up to seven years behind bars for his conviction on a single count of child endangerment. Lynn, who oversaw the work of 800 priests, was convicted of covering up sex-abuse allegations, often by transferring predatory priests to unsuspecting parishes. His case, which was closely watched by the Vatican, followed a series of child abuse scandals that hit the church in the United States and in Europe.

Southeastern University Conference Commisioner Discusses Penn State's Freeh Report and Schools' Duties

Tremont Sheldon Robinson Mahoney saw this article in the Connecticut Post and thought it was very relevant to the mandated reporter laws in Connecticut.  Excerpts of the article are below: Southeastern  Conference Commissioner Mike  Slive said a recent report criticizing Penn State's handling of sexual abuse  allegations serves as a stark reminder to schools and athletic programs  nationwide that they can't let one individual "derail the soul of  an institution."
Slive briefly but pointedly  referenced last week's report by a special investigator in his opening address  at SEC media days Tuesday. "We must maintain an honest and  open dialogue across all levels of university administration," Slive said.  "There must be an effective system of checks and balances within the  administrative structure to protect all who come in contact with it, especially  those who cannot protect themselves.

Report Slams Penn State's 'Total Disregard' in Sandusky Case

Senior Penn State administrators exhibited a "total disregard for the safety and welfare'' of the children who were sexually abused by former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, according to an internal investigation of the university. "The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized,'' the investigation concluded. It cited former Penn State University president Graham Spanier, former vice president Gary Schultz, former head football coach Joe Paterno and Athletic Director Tim Curley, now on leave, as never demonstrating "through actions or words, any concern for the safety and well-being of Sandusky's victims until after Sandusky's arrest." The 267-page report by former FBI director Louis Freeh comes less than three weeks after Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 victims during a span of 15 years. Sandusky remains in a central Pennsylvania county jail awaiting formal sentencing.
