Sexual abuse is a "gateway experience" that often leads to drug addiction later in life

Lesser known fact about Sigmund Freud - early in his career he was all but laughed out of his field for suggesting that sexual abuse within families was a significant social problem. To remain respected he recanted his findings. Toward the end of his career he went back to his original claims and backed them up, demonstrating that this ugliness was indeed not simply at the fringes of society.

New Details on Fairfield Ludlowe High School Fencing Coach Sexually Assaulting Female Student

A 36-year-old man who coached Fairfield high schools' fencing team, and also coached the sport at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, has been charged with sexually assaulting a female student at Fairfield Ludlowe High School last year. John Tejada, of Mixville Road in Cheshire, was arrested Thursday on a warrant charging him with second-degree sexual assault. The assault took place last year, police said, when Tejada was still coaching the fencing team comprising athletes from both Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde high schools. He had been the team's coach since 2010, police said.

What went wrong in the Catholic Church? Why have its leaders been unable to deal with the priest sex abuse scandal in an honest and convincing way?

The files released last week by America's largest Catholic archdiocese revealed new and disturbing details about how church officials schemed to protect priests accused of molesting children. But was the scandal in Los Angeles really so much worse than in other places?

123 child victims of Internet sex abuse identified -- one just 19 days old, US officials say

In just over a month, more than 120 sexually exploited children -- one just 19 days old -- were identified in an international operation that found them depicted in child pornography on the Internet, U.S. officials said Thursday. In Operation Sunflower, led by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigation unit from Nov. 1 to Dec. 7, 123 victims of child sexual exploitation were identified, ICE Director John Morton said at a press conference in Washington. Of that group, 44 children had been living with their abusers, and 79 children were exploited by people outside of their home or were victimized as children and are now adults. Seventy female and 53 male victims rescued; 110 of the victims were identified in 19 U.S. states and the rest were identified in six foreign countries.

Men Face Societal Pressures When Reporting Sexual Abuse

Although  the two groups have more in common than not, experts say male sexual assault  victims are often left to deal with certain issues that female victims might  not face. Research suggests more than half  of all sexual assaults in the United States go unreported. ........... Men represent a small but  significant share of the nation's sexual assault victims. According to data from  the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau  of Justice Statistics, 11 percent of sexual assault victims between 1992 and  2000 were male.

Tips for Keeping Children Safe from Predators

We saw this posting on the Little League Online - Baseball and Softball and thought it provided great information.  The article is below. Jill Starishevsky knows the horrors of child abuse better than most - she's a prosecutor of child abuse and sex crimes in New York City. The mother of three is also the author of My Body Belongs To Me, a children's book intended to prevent child sexual abuse by teaching children that their bodies are their own. She shares the following 10 tips for keeping children safe from predators:

Child abuse shames and silences victims

The child sex-abuse accusations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky are staggering and yet familiar. Mr. Sandusky, the founder of the Second Mile charity for troubled boys, generously brought them to football games and treated them to food, clothes and gifts, eight men told a grand jury. He also fondled them or exposed himself or had sex with them, they testified. One might think it would be easy to prosecute such accusations made by men, now in their late teens or 20s, who tell remarkably similar stories. But federal data show that less than half of suspects in child sex-abuse cases are brought to trial, mostly because no crime can be proved against them. "It's really tough" to get justice on child sexual abuse, said Bill Murray, a Los Angeles community activist who leads the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse.

A Brief Therapy Heals Trauma in Children

Every year millions of children from all walks of life become victims of, or witnesses to, abusive or violent events that can result in long-lasting symptoms of distress. The events can range from sexual and physical abuse to involvement in a natural disaster, fire or serious motor vehicle accident.

Update on Sexual Abuse Initiatives from CT State Legislature

As  such the DCF will use a $3.2 million federal grant to improve the way  the agency, community-based clinics and social workers statewide handle  children affected by trauma in all its forms.
