What are the good and bad features of Tesla and other electric cars?

On Behalf of | Sep 16, 2021 | Car Accidents |

Tesla is a name well-known these days for making high-quality vehicles. The self-driving component gets a lot of attention as being the newest technology in the industry and the future of driving. However, it also gets a lot of scrutiny for its safety, but this feature is not the only aspect of a Tesla that impacts safety.

According to Top Speed, there are a few features that can be good or bad depending on your familiarity with them and how you use them when driving a Tesla or another electric vehicle.

Automation features

Beyond the autopilot, Teslas contain many other automation features. The suite of driver-assistance programs can be handy, but they take time to understand. If you do not know how to use them, you could put yourself in a situation where you hit other vehicles or create a hazard on the roadway.

Furthermore, there is plenty of room for failure if you do not keep your software updated. It is like any other type of technology. You have to consistently get updates to keep it running properly. You will also need to ensure your hardware stays updated.

Touchscreen

The center console touchscreen is nice when it comes to controlling the many aspects of the vehicle, but it could also create a distraction when driving. It allows you to stream on it and access apps, which is incredibly dangerous when you are behind the wheel unless you are in a parking spot.

Power

Electric vehicles have some limitations that could put you in danger. You could run out of power if you do not plan ahead since charging stations are not yet readily available. This could leave you stranded on the roadway, which is always dangerous and could lead to an accident.

Another issue is if you are driving in cold weather as electric vehicles do not do well in these conditions. Your vehicle could stop working and leave you in a seriously bad situation.

Speed

Finally, a Tesla is a fast car. It accelerates quickly, which may seem nice, but if you do not know how to handle that, it can be incredibly dangerous. To be safe in a Tesla, you have to get to know the car and learn how to use it.

Risk of fire

Electric vehicle makers have issued warnings to owners about the dangers of parking their electric vehicles in garages overnight while charging the battery or when their battery is fully charged. Battery fires have been reported among several electric vehicle makers and many of those manufacturers have issued recalls. Some of the manufacturers have told owners to park their vehicles outside until the state of charge is lower than 80%.

Buying a Tesla or other electric vehicle is a big investment. Electric vehicles have a lot of great features, and they will continue to improve over time. Right now, it is important to understand the benefits and potential pitfalls of having an electric vehicle so you can make the best decision for you and your family.
