Distracted drivers are a serious safety threat on our roadways

People in Bridgeport may think they are great multitaskers. Being able to do two or more things at the same time may come in handy in the workplace or at home, but some people take multitasking too far and attempt to engage in it while driving.

Distracted driving is a very serious issue. According to one study, motorists these days are 10 percent more distracted than they were in 2018. Specifically, the study found that motorists who operate a cellphone for more than 10 percent of the time they are behind the wheel were actively ignoring the road for approximately 28 percent of the time they were driving. Cellphone distractions include taking a phone call, sending a text message, programming a navigation system or choosing a song to play. Any of these activities can take a driver's eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and mind off the task of driving. This can lead to serious car accidents that injure or kill others on the road.

Cellphone use while driving is not the only way a motorist can be distracted. Some motorists choose to eat, groom themselves, manipulate settings such as the temperature or radio station or even simply talk to others in the car with them while driving. These are all distractions that could lead to a collision. Victims who are harmed in accidents caused by these negligent drivers may be able to pursue a personal injury lawsuit in hopes of recovering compensation for their damages.

People in Connecticut need to realize that they have a duty of care while driving to operate their vehicles in a manner that is safe and reasonable under the circumstances. This means avoiding distractions and focusing on the task of driving. It is up to all motorists to keep our roads safe, which is why it is important to hold distracted drivers who cause car accidents responsible for their actions.
