Alcohol and drug use can lead to devastating car accidents

Most people in Connecticut are responsible when it comes to drinking alcohol. However, there will always be those who make the dangerous decision to drive drunk, causing accidents that injure or kill other people on the road. These car accidents can be very devastating. It is important for everyone in the state to understand just how alcohol impairs their ability to drive.

Alcohol can change the way a person's brain functions. A motorist who has consumed alcohol may have a reduced ability to judge where they are in relation to other motorists, their reaction time can be slowed, and they can be uncoordinated. Alcohol can also make it difficult for a motorist to concentrate, use common sense, be courteous and be a responsible driver altogether.

It is important to note that while alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine or liquor can intoxicate a driver, drivers who have taken certain drugs -- even over-the-counter drugs such as cold medicine and antihistamines -- can find that the side effects they experience impair their ability to drive safely. It is important to read the warning labels on any medications you take before driving, to ensure you will be able to safely operate an automobile.

While all of this is good advice, the fact remains that driving while intoxicated can lead to a motor vehicle accident. All motorists are tasked with driving in a manner that is safe and reasonable under the circumstances. Driving while intoxicated violates this duty. If an intoxicated driver strikes another automobile, causing those in that automobile to suffer injuries or death, the intoxicated driver should be held responsible for the incident.
