Birth injuries and medical malpractice claims

On Behalf of | May 23, 2018 | Firm News, Medical Malpractice, Personal Injury |

When most people in Connecticut hear about medical malpractice lawsuits, they probably think of botched surgeries or incorrect medication prescriptions. And, as those types of scenarios do, in fact, result in quite a few medical malpractice claims, those people would be in the right. However, there is another area of medical malpractice that occurs far too often: birth injuries.

When a pregnant woman and her family go to the hospital for the birth of a child, they all expect to receive the very best medical treatment and care. Unfortunately, not all births go smoothly. In some cases, complications arise that make it necessary to consider different types of options to attempt to have the baby born healthy. But, that isn’t always the result.

For instance, some babies can suffer from cerebral palsy, which is health condition that can be directly caused by injuries the baby suffers during the birthing process. Anesthesia errors during the birth, or even a lack of oxygen to the baby, are ways in which the baby can suffer from neurological injuries during the birthing process. This could lead to medical conditions that affects the baby’s muscle coordination and body movement for the rest of his or her life.

As far as medical technology and other advances in treatment have come, birth injuries are still far too common. The number of things that can go wrong in the birthing process means that pregnant women and their families need to make sure that they do everything they can to select competent medical providers. If a medical professional makes a mistake that leads to a birth injury, a medical malpractice lawsuit may be an option to explore.
