One man shares his story and hopes to end distracted driving

There are many tragic stories of the impact that distracted driving is having on individuals and families throughout the country. It used to be that drunk drivers were the biggest threat to anyone on the roadways, but now distracted driving is commonly considered just as dangerous. And, like it or not, millions of people engage in distracted driving every day, including many Connecticut residents.

A recent news article covered the story of one man who lost his daughter to the negligent actions of a distracted driver. The article details how the man's daughter was crossing a street at a crosswalk when a 58-year-old driver struck her. According to the report, the driver had been distracted by reaching for his GPS navigation system and did not even see the man's daughter crossing the street.

Now, the father is the president of an organization called "End Distracted Driving. Org." He is hoping to use the tale of his daughter's untimely death to warn everyone about the perils of distracted driving, and his stated goal is to make sure that distracted driving is viewed as completely "unacceptable."

Just as, for decades, non-profits and governmental entities worked tirelessly to increase awareness of how dangerous drunk driving can be, we are now beginning to see the same dedication and effort from those who want to combat distracted driving. As the recent article noted, in one recent year - 2015 - approximately 3,500 people died due to distracted driving. This conduct is entirely preventable, and should be avoided at all costs.
