Be on the lookout for overmedication at nursing homes

When most people in Connecticut think about nursing home abuse or neglect, they probably envision negligent staff members doing other things instead of caring for their loved ones, or even physically or verbally abusing nursing home residents. But, there are many different ways that nursing home abuse and neglect can occur. One way that many people don't think of is overmedication of nursing home residents.

And, there are a couple of different ways that overmedication can occur. First, many nursing home residents are elderly individuals who may have serious health conditions. As a result, they are prescribed medication for treatment or pain management. If these prescribed medications are not given to residents in the appropriate dosage, the results could be dangerous for these individuals.

Another way that overmedication can occur is when the staff at a nursing home prescribes medication to residents themselves. In fact, it is becoming more widely known that some nursing homes are prescribing medications to residents in an attempt to keep them quiet - antipsychotic medications are used for these purposes.

When Connecticut residents believe that their loved ones who are residents of nursing homes are not being treated properly or, even worse, are actually being physically abused, it may be time to take legal action. At our law firm, we work with families who are experiencing these difficult circumstances. For more information, please visit the nursing home neglect and elder abuse section of our law firm's website. Nursing home staff members need to be held accountable for their negligent and abusive actions.
