Am I a mandated reporter of elder abuse?

Connecticut residents who have a loved one in a nursing home or long-term care facility will find it helpful to know that in the State of Connecticut, all licensed health care providers are legislatively mandated to report any suspected acts of abuse, neglect or exploitation against certain vulnerable groups. These groups include children, people with disabilities, those living in long-term care facilities and our elder population.

Comedian Bill Cosby accused of sexual assault

Our Connecticut residents have likely heard or read about the recent sexual abuse accusations a couple of women have brought against comedian Bill Cosby. According to media reports a woman, now a journalist and publicist, who met the comedian in 1969 indicated that Cosby had sexually assaulted her nearly 45 years ago when she was only 19-years-old.

Former teacher facing a charge of sexual assault of a 17-year-old

Teacher and professors are generally held in high esteem, serve as role models and typically students look up to them, trust them and seek guidance from them. Thus, when the trusted and respected teacher-student bond is violated or broken the consequences on the community and the person are devastating. Connecticut residents may find it interesting to learn that in July 2014 a 36-year-old English teacher and former Southern Connecticut State University adjunct professor was arrested and charged with second degree sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl.

E.O. Smith H.S. in Mansfield CT Coach Charged with Sexually Assaulting Students

Recently there has been a great deal of writing in the popular press about the problem of sexual assault at the University of Connecticut. Last week, police arrested Geoffrey Justin Gillette, a former teaching assistant and coach at E. O. Smith High School in nearby Mansfield, CT. Mr. Gillette, who coached football and track, is accused of having sexual relations with three different students at E. O. Smith High School. It is alleged that he had sex with the girls at his parents' home in Coventry, his apartment in Hampton, and in his motor vehicle.

David Kress of Thompson Connecticut has been charged with sexually abusing children who were boy scouts. Mr. Thompson, who was a troop leader, has been released on a $100,000 bond.
