Summertime Road Safety

School's out for the summer and it's a beautiful time for a road trip. But, as Attorney Frank Bailey reminds us, with more teen drivers on the road, it can be an especially dangerous time to drive. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), July had the highest number of fatal car accidents in 2012, with June and August rounding out the top three months.

Check out Frank Bailey's Teenage Driving Tips

As always, it's important to set a good example for your teen driver and avoid distracted driving. Put your cell phone in the trunk where it won't be a distraction. Pull over if you need to look up directions. Summer is also road construction season, so it's wise to slow down in work zones and avoid the heavy fines that accompany speeding in those areas.

The heat of the season also calls for some preventive maintenance to your vehicle. The air inside your tires expands in hot weather, and can lead to blowouts if your tires are older. Keep an eye on your tires and be alert for other vehicles that might be experiencing a blowout, especially during heat waves.

Most importantly, be aware of the bikers, runners and skateboards that appear when the sun comes out. Give them a healthy distance and be prepared for the unexpected to happen. Remember, you are your own best defense in preventing accidents. Being prepared for the unexpected can help keep you on the road all summer long.

If you are involved in a car accident this summer, you'll want to talk with an attorney that has experience helping people make as full a recovery as possible. We invite you to talk to us and receive a free initial consultation about your case.
