What To Do If You Suspect Your Child Has Been Sexually Abused

jason.jpgAttorney Jason Tremont helps parents prevent sexual abuse at school, camp, sports leagues and other settings. He discusses what signs to look for if they suspect that their children have been sexually abused.

A lot of our work has led us to an understanding of the psychology of a child, including the warning signs to watch out for. We see a lot of coaching situations now, as kids spend more time in travel sports camps. Unfortunately, a lot of parents are coming forward placing a great deal of trust in coaching figures, and sometimes, that trust is misplaced.

If your child is about to begin a new activity, such as summer camp or a sports league, it's wise to do some homework of your own.

  • First, do an online investigation of the place in Google or another search engine to see if there have been any complaints.
  • Give the organization a call to confirm that they perform background checks on employees and volunteers.
  • Confirm your child will never be alone with an adult.

• Speak to your kids. Let them know that no adult should be asking them to keep a secret or spent time alone with them that is different from the other kids.
• You can also search the camp or organization on of the Connecticut Judicial Website.

If you're a parent and you believe something may have happened to your child, the first step is to contact the authorities or a firm such as ours. We can go through all of the options and even do discovery or look into it to see what are your best available options.

If you want to discuss a potential case, I'd be happy to sit down and discuss your option with you and what to expect. Please contact me to learn more about how to get started.
