TLC documentary aims to raise awareness about sexual abuse

Child sexual abuse is probably one of the most heinous actions that any person can perpetrate on an innocent, defenseless child. It is estimated that one child in every ten is likely to be sexually abused before they reach the age of eighteen. Shockingly, current estimates put the number of people who have had to endure and live with the pain and suffering of being sexually abused when they were a child at 42 million people in this country.

Recently, sexual abuse against children perpetrated by a family member was brought to the forefront of the nation's psyche when one of the stars of a hit reality show, 19 Kids and Counting on TLC, was accused of sexually molesting at least four of his sisters, as well as a baby sitter over a decade ago.

TLC, which broadcasts the show, cancelled any remaining airings and removed the show from its lineup after evidence surfaced to corroborate the allegations that the oldest member of the family had in fact sexually fondled those who he was accused of molesting when he was a teenager.

In an effort to raise awareness about the issue of sexual abuse that children may suffer, a documentary that focuses on the problem of child sexual abuse will air later this month with the goal being to raise awareness of this silent epidemic. The documentary will also include a prevention session as well as a number of experts on the subject as well as hearing from two of the victims of the TV star who was never charged for allegedly molesting his sisters and a babysitter.

It can take years and even decades for sexual abuse victims to come forward with their stories. It is important to keep in mind that those who have suffered harm due to sexual abuse may be able to hold their perpetrators responsible for the harm caused.
