When a medical product is not manufactured properly, it can lead to serious consequences for patients. The attorneys of Tremont Sheldon Robinson Mahoney in Bridgeport, Connecticut, are looking into claims against medical product manufacturers whose products cause serious injuries and in some cases death.
With our extensive background in medical malpractice and product liability law, our attorneys handle personal injury and wrongful death claims related to:
- Defective medical devices
- Defective surgical equipment
- Dangerous or defective prescription drugs
Our lawyers investigate injuries or medical problems that may have arisen due to defects in medical products or surgical equipment. Recent investigations into medical equipment manufacturers have included problems related to hip and joint replacements or prescription drugs.
One example of a defective medical product is the DePuy Hip System. DePuy Orthopaedics recalled its ASR replacement hip system because its components can come loose, fracturing the bone around the implant, depositing metal fragments in the bloodstream, and causing pseudotumors. In August 2010, DePuy announced a voluntary recall of the ASR Hip system after receiving new information from the UK National Joint Registry. The DePuy ASR TM XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR TM Hip Resurfacing System have a 12 to 13 percent chance of failing within five years. The reason why approximately 12 percent of recipients of an ASR replacement hip require revision surgery is that the ASR devices can deteriorate and fail completely.
Upon failure, a patient may experience some or all of the following: pseudotumors, increased levels of chromium in the blood, loosening or dislocation of the implant, hip bone fracture, and/or an inflamed joint that can complicate corrective surgery. More than 93,000 people received this faulty system in the United States alone.
